The program of events and Conservation Workdays for 2019 is as follows:

     

MAY 2019

Thursday 23rd: Wildflower Meadow Walk. A look at another of our meadows close to Gillfield Wood with Rebekah Newman. This is a late spring evening stroll with the delight of seeing meadow flowers and learning about the need to protect these habitats. 

Meet: Mickley Lane by the Shepley Spitfire for a 6:30pm start and taking around 2 hours.

Free for members, £3 for non-members.

 

Sunday 26th:Friends of Gillfield Wood practical conservation morning, run with the help of the Sheffield Council Ranger Service.  Meet 10am at Baslow Road bus terminus.  Refreshments, tools, etc. provided.  Please wear strong footwear and appropriate clothing.  All levels of help required and guidance given.  Do also check our website at www.friendsofgillfieldwood.com – any late changes of venue will be published there. 

 

JUNE 2019

Saturday 22ndLichen/Invertebrate Survey in Gillfield Wood. This is a joint Lichen Survey with members of the Friends of Gillfield Wood and Sorby Natural History Society, lead by Steve Price. Other Sorby members interested in invertebrates will hopefully join us giving opportunity to learn to recognise not only lichens but also woodland invertebrates.

 

Meet at the end of Totley Hall Lane at 10:30am. Bring packed lunch if you wish to stay into the afternoon. We will finish no later than 4pm. All welcome. This is a great opportunity to learn about less obvious aspects of our woodland.

Saturday 27th: Bird Walk. Please join Chris Measures for his third Bird Walk of 2019. This is the time of year with opportunity to see butterflies and birds, and hear bird song. We recommend that you wear good footwear and appropriate clothing.  Binoculars and cameras welcome.  Meet for an early start of 8am at the Scout Hut, Aldam Road.  The walk will last around 2-3 hours. No experience necessary

 

SEPTEMBER 2019

OCTOBER 2019

Sunday 6th: Small Mammal Survey. We welcome back Val Clinging as we look at traps set the night before in a couple of locations in Gillfield Wood. We will start at 8:30am at the bottom of Totley Hall Lane. This is a lovely family event.
